Volunteering in a political campaign is an invaluable experience. It can be an exciting, intense, short term sense of group solidarity and a fun way to meet others who share your passion for an issue / candidate, while learning how voting blocs, even minority ones, can and do affect election outcomes.
Candidate recruitment for the state legislature is beginning now for the November elections. Getting MFOA-endorsed candidates elected is one of the most important things you can do to advance animal protection.

Maine Friends of Animals is asking its members and animal protection activists in Maine to please support its effort in ending one of the most egregious forms of animal cruelty, which is now being perpetrated by the Canadian government’s sanctioning of the annual slaughter of over 300,000 harp or hooked seal pups. Maine being the closest American state to this extremely inhumane hunt must support a complete ban on this brutal practice for fur. MFOA’s strategy is political and financial in nature and needs your support. Three ways you can help MFOA in this effort:

- Know who your local animal control officer is and let him/her be the eyes and ears for you on animal problems. Support your ACO by requesting your town provide him/her resources to do their job
- Volunteer at your local shelter
- Write letters to your State Representative and Senator to support animal protection legislation
- Become a member of MFOA and/or other animal protection organizations
- Use the tax return check-off to support the state spay / neuter program
- Write a letter to the editor in your local daily and weekly newspaper
- Become a vegetarian
- Set up an MFOA informational table / booth at a local function, event or county fair
- Donate financially to animal protection and support organizations
- Educate a neighbor / resident about his/her ‘dog chained for life’
- Report animal cruelty to ACO, the state Animal Welfare Program, MFOA and the local media
- Live and shop with compassion
- Copy MFOA newsletter and distribute it to others to get others involved
- Know your adversaries and what they are doing
- Educate yourself on the issues (see MFOA web site and links)
- Demonstrate on annual anti-fur day (day after Thanksgiving)
- Become part of our online community and receive MFOA Action Alerts and Updates.
- Run for public office (contact MFOA for advice, support and assistance)
- Protest circuses with captive wildlife in Maine
- Feed a feral cat
- Work to help elect an animal-friendly legislator
- Make your property wildlife friendly (contact HSUS or MFOA for assistance)
- Adopt a pet from your local shelter, not by buying from a kennel or pet store
- Be a MFOA District Coordinator
- Host a fundraising party
