Animal Protection Advocates to Demonstrate Against Ringling Brothers Circus and Its Use of Elephants Print E-mail

(Falmouth) ….. Maine animal protection advocates will continue its protest of circuses with captive wildlife. Maine Friends of Animals (MFOA) will demonstrate against the Ringling Brothers Circus that will be in Portland October 12-15. The group has long contended that the use of elephants in circuses is extremely cruel, and they want circuses with wild animals banned in Maine.

“While romanticizing the circus with wild elephants, three basic facts are concealed by the industry --- the excessive and abusive training needed to break the will of the animal, the miserable, chained, extremely confined living conditions of this intelligent, social, roaming, family animal, and deposition of the elephant once it is no longer useful to the circus, said MFOA Director, Robert Fisk, Jr. “It is an inhumane and outdated form of entertainment that will end, we just want it to end now.”

The Ringling Brothers Circus is considered one of the worst circuses by animal activists who cite brutal training videos, a history of Animal Welfare Act violations and deaths of elephants under Ringling Brother’s care. MFOA will demonstrate at the Cumberland County Civic Center opening night of the circus from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM and again on Saturday at 3:00 PM and Sunday at 12 noon.

“Our demonstrations are educationally based,” said MFOA Education & Outreach Coordinator, Dani Jacobs. “We will pass out information on the facts about circus elephants, the Ringling Brothers dismal and abusive history, and a list of the many successful circuses without captive wildlife. One only has to go to circuses.com or api4animals.org to realize the Ringling Brothers motto the “greatest show on earth” should be the cruelest show on earth. We will continue to educate the public, media and legislators until Maine only has animal free circuses.”

Maine Friends of Animals points out that there are over 30 successful circuses that do not use animals, such as Cirque du Soliel and the Moscow Circus. Maine Friends of Animals has a long history of advocating against the use of elephants in circuses, and passed a ban on circuses with elephants in the Maine House in 2003, but lost in the Senate.
